Health and Safety at the Workplace
Every company aims to provide a safe workplace for its employees and at the end of the day, the ends of human casualties cannot be measured. The repercussions will affect the employee, their family, friends and even the company at the end of the day. The type of injury may differ from company to company and even the type of work an individual does. A common realization is that in an office setting the harm to employees can be minimal to none. However, it’s important for an organization to be ready no matter what the setting is because at office, faulty wires and electronics or a fire might break out.
A safe work environment can bring employers many benefits such as from preventing injuries to increasing productivity (United States Department of Labour, n.d.), the implementation of health and safety rules in the workplace which can allow the organization to maintain a feel-safe work environment for its employees. More advantages that the organization can look forward with good health and safety are that with a safety environment, accidents will reduce, directly causing accident investigations, employee compensations and employee heal times to be eliminated. Furthermore, a visible interest of employees in health safety, increases the employee confidence at the workplace and show decrease in employee absenteeism along with reduce harm to company machinery and equipment (Ahmed, 2021). When it comes to it, at the end of the day, maintenance of health and safety can reflect on company profits.
Therefore, a proactive safety culture may help employees to avoid injuries, mishaps, and other problems, and HR's role is to ensure that the organization needs to invest in a safety culture. Workers' safety is a major component under the HR management while training and development are critical components which help to mitigate any workplace hazard. Under the workplace safety HR involvement contains in a higher level since every step in the recruiting and hiring process should stress the need of adhering to high standards of health and safety as part of the company's ethics. The personnel that recruit should be able to perform their duties properly and in accordance with applicable health and safety regulations. HR is also responsible for disseminating, implementing, and enforcing safety regulations to ensure that all employees understand and adhere to them.
To make sure that a safe work environment is created, the organization should identify the workplace hazards in the earliest. These hazards can include mechanical issues, dangerous chemicals and electrical equipment while the employees should be aware that the type of equipment, they’re working with can be hazardous and care must be taken. Therefore, lack of health and safety at work can make employees quit hence educating employees, showing interest toward employee safety can promote employee motivation and the caution and preparation taken can reduce cost and eventually reflect in profits.
