Importance of Green Human Resource Management Practices

Sustainability has become a major consideration in all parts of human resources management since it is a management indicator that deals with an organization's most precious asset of people. Sustainability in human resource management can be defined as "the management of human resources to satisfy the current and future needs of the organization and society without sacrificing the potential to fulfill the future needs." This includes corporate sustainability, corporate social responsibility and sustainable work systems. In the context of an organization's attempts to conserve the environment and reduce the impact of environmental challenges on the enterprise, human resource management policies, attitudes, and practices may be referred to as "Green Human Resource Management.  As a result, sustainable practices may be supported by the whole workforce, increasing employee commitment and employees' carbon footprint which has reduced by introducing environmentally friendly human resource initiatives such as electronic filing, job-sharing, teleconferencing, virtual interviews, recycling, telecommuting, online training and energy-efficient office spaces. Organizations may find innovative ways to save money on human resource without jeopardizing the quality of their workforces when they engage in green human resource initiatives. Therefore, it’s important to promote environmentally friendly processes which may strategically concentrating on Green human resource management practices in an organization.  


Green Human Resource Management process

1. Recruitment & Job Design
Green job design and analysis are two most common green HRM approaches where firm has improved job descriptions (JDs) for new recruits which include sustainability-related activities that can be created or approved in coordination with other departments.

2. Selection
After the first screening of CVs, HR should ensure that the next stages of the selection process including the applicants who are willing to make environmentally friendly decisions hence during a job interview, inquire about environmental challenges or a team dynamic need to include environmental factors. 

3. Onboarding and Induction
Employee induction should be organized in a way that helps new hires integrate into the company's green culture. Environmental issues and green activities should also be promoted in these programs.

4. Training and Development
Company leaders should provide training resources to help employees learn about environmental stewardship hence employees who are provided with opportunities for growth and development are more likely to look for methods to make their company more successful

5. Performance Management and Appraisal
Incorporating environmental metrics into performance assessments can help a business go greener by setting sustainability objectives and measuring progress toward them.

6. Compensation and Benefits
Recognition of employees' efforts to enhance environmental performance is the purpose of green compensation and incentive management.

  • Company can advertise their environmental efforts to the media and gain the attention of potential consumers and potential new sales.
  • Boost morale in the workplace.
  • Boosting competitiveness and overall performance of the employees
